My dog's stomach gurgles loudly, but he's fine. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Whippet | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 17 days old

My dogs stomach has been making gurgling noises for over 5 hours. He doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort or distress but the noise seems very loud and pretty much constant. Should I be concerned?

Hello, thank you for your question about Walter. Based on the symptoms that you are describing I suspect that Walter is experiencing some mild stomach upset or indigestion. Since he is otherwise acting normal I would recommend continuing to monitor him for the next 24 hours. If at any time he develops any vomiting, diarrhea, or lack or appetite I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

It’s possible Bosco is having some increased irritation in his gut. While many causes are possible, the most common are parasitic or bacterial in nature. You may try feeding Bosco a bland diet and a probiotic for a week to see if things improve. If they don’t get better or if he gets worse, I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian for parasites and bacteria overgrowth. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Funny noises coming from the belly is due to an increase in gut motility. Basically, the intestines are moving around more rapidly. As long as he's not repeatedly vomiting, has diarrhea, or is otherwise acting abnormal, then it's completely fine and normal to hear gut sounds sometimes. It may also indicate impending diarrhea, so watch for that in the next day or two. If he has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. I hope that helps and all is well.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The noises you are hearing is caused from gas and food being pushed through the intestines. Sometimes there is more gas or the intestines have increased motility. Hearing it in an otherwise normal dog may not be an issue. Most of the time we hear the gurgling when a dog is either not eating or may have vomiting or diarrhea. The extra gas can be uncomfortable or something is causing increased intestinal motility like a viral infection or inflammation from eating something they shouldn't have. I would just watch Whiskey and if he remains fine I wouldn't worry too much. I wish you the best!
