Why did my dog's penis have a temporary bulge? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 100 lbs

we have a large 100lb catahoula mix and just got home and was scratching his belly and noticed a large hard round bulge at his penile shaft that we've never noticed before. We panicked and almost packed up to go to the vet but then checked again and nearly gone. He just peed fine, no blood, no drainage.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Cypress. I'm wondering if this bulge was toward the back of his penile shaft. If it was, then what you likely saw was his bulbourethral glands. These are normal structures of the penis, and they become enlarged when the dog is aroused. Even neutered dogs can become aroused. Given that this bulge is now gone and he's totally normal, that would be my suspicion. There's nothing to worry about here! I hope this helps!
