My Cockapoo has severe allergies, Apoquel isn't helping. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 23.2 lbs

My 1 year old Cockapoo has recently been scooting her bum, scratching her neck& behind her ears, armpits & been biting/licking her bum. The vet put her on Apoquel twice daily for 14 days & wanted to wean her down to once daily. Apparently Apoquel isn’t good long term at the loading dose that she is on & once daily is not helping. She doesn’t have any parasites/worms (that has been checked). She also has a very sensitive stomach so she is on Vegetarian diet. What other options could there be?

Hello, thank you for your question about Honey. Based on the symptoms that you describe it seems that Honey has pretty significant allergies. Another treatment option that you can discuss with your veterinarian is use of a relatively new product called Cytopoint. This is an injectable medication given by your veterinarian that helps to treat severe allergic dermatitis. Many owners report that this medication has helped dramatically. Another option would be to schedule an appointment with a veterinary dermatologist for further evaluation of her skin disease and to discuss more extensive treatment options. Hope this helps, good luck!
