Why is my dog licking his paws, biting, and acting territorial?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered

My dog is licking his paws a lot and roughly, he is super territorial during it and growls/barks angrily if you touch the ground anywhere near him. This has gone on for a while but my family has ignored it. This time he has barked while stile biting his paws. He has had all of his shots and frontline is up to date.

Hello, thank you for your question about Harley. Itching/licking at the paws can be a sign of underlying infection or possibly allergies. Dogs can get bacterial skin infections on the skin of their paws and licking can lead to inflammation and discomfort. These symptoms are also seen secondary to allergies (to aspects of the environment or sometimes diet). Since this problem has been occurring for some time and has not improved I would recommend having Harley seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the affected areas and discuss diagnostic tests such as an impression of the irritated skin. Depending on the results of these tests they can go through the recommended treatments with you. Hope this helps, good luck!
