My dog gagged and threw up. What should I do if he ate a nail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

Last night I heard out dog gagging, sounded like he was trying to get something up. When investingating, found a small 1 inch nail in his general vicinity. I don't know if it was a nail ir what it was he was trying to get up. About 12 hours later he hasn't shown any signs that something is wrong, except for he just threw up. What would bs the best course of action in ghis scenario?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Jayden is eating/drinking/pooping/peeing and playing normally, then I would just monitor him for now. If Jayden is vomiting, not eating, acting unwell, has a sore belly, or is not himself, then get him to the vet for some x-rays. In the meantime, feed a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals. Best of luck with Jayden!
