My puppy has bright orange diarrhea on antibiotics. Should I stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 42 lbs

Our puppy went to the vet yesterday due to mild vomiting and major diarrhea (blood in the very liquid stool). They gave him prevomax and synulox injections, and have prescribed clavaseptin for 5 days. They're unsure if the illness was viral or if he had eaten something bad. He hasn't vomited since yesterday (before vet visit) but is continuing to have diarrhea (2 days ongoing). I feel that the antibiotics are making his stool worse, as it is now bright orange liquid. Should I stop them?

Please contact your vet clinic to discuss changing or altering your prescription - the course should always be completed unless directed otherwise by the prescribing vet and we are not in a position to authorise this. Antibiotics are often used in bloodied diarrhoea in young pups to prevent bacterial infection spreading to the blood stream and are continued until the bowel has a chance to repair (5-7days). Antibiotic resistance is a higher risk if short or low doses are used
