My senior dog sleeps a lot and won't go outside. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Silky Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

In October I adopted a 13 yr. old Silky Terrier who was rescued from a hoarding situation. She had been in a foster home for 11 mos. before I got her. She was very fearful and shaking a lot. She is now pretty relaxed. She liked to sniff around outside, walk down the street and around the block. She was happy to go out every 2 hours or so. Now she sleeps all day until about 7-9 p.m. She is a picky eater. She doesn't seem sick and is frisky when she's up, but doesn't like to go out.

I'm glad to hear Jill is doing so well. Dog's preferences can change with the weather or just due to their own reasons. As long as she doesn't;t seem anxious or fearful outside, I think it's probably fine. Many dogs, especially older ones, do sleep a lot! Make sure she is going outside to potty at least 4-5 times a day and watch her for any signs of illness. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
