My dog's tail isn't wagging, but she shows no pain. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

I noticed my dog’s tail hasn’t been wagging recently. She’s doesn’t seem like she’s in any pain and when I touch her tail to see if there might be any abraisions or lumps she still seems fine and doesn’t cry. May I add that she’s a very happy and excited dog all the time and she’s always wagging her tail a little too much. Her tail doesn’t seem broken because it still feels in tact all the way through from the base to the end. Her tail usually curls up ward. She’s a shih tzu and poodle mix

I recommend to take Mia in to see her veterinarian and have her tail checked as well as her anal glands. Sometimes when pets have anal gland issues they will keep the tail down instead of caring it in the normal position. Small breed dogs can especially have this problem. Pets can also exhaust the muscles of the tail and this can cause them to not wag it as well. The doctor will thoroughly examine the area and hopefully determine the cause. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
