My dog ate old food and threw up. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 11 months old

My dog was outside earlier and ate old food that had been thrown in a ditch outside. I have no idea what was out there but a few hours later she threw up undigested dog food and some small bits of unidentifiable food. She is feeling fine as far as we can tell and still has an appetite. Just wondering if we should worry.

If Lexus continues to vomit or starts to have diarrhea in the next 24-48 hours I would bring her in to see your veterinarian as she may benefit from anti-nausea medication, fluids, anti-diarrheal antibiotics and a prescription intestinal diet. If she continues to act normally with a normal activity level, normal frequent of stool and no vomiting/diarrhea, you are likely in the clear! Good luck!
