My senior dog is suffering. How do I know if it's time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

I am considering euthanizing my sm dog, she's incontinent of urine/stool and unable to use her hind legs. Becoming off balance for a while now. Still eating but gags on water and voice is weakened. Yelps when I have to move her and won't let me hold her usually, which is unusual; she's a cuddler. Pants and shakes often, Is it time?

I am so sorry about Nubby. It definitely sounds like it is time for an exam/consult re: humane euthanasia with a veterinarian you are comfortable with. Yelping when moved, panting and shaking when at rest are likely signs that Nubby is in pain. Incontinence and inability to use her back legs are definite factors that diminish quality of life. Wishing you strength and love during this difficult time.
