When will my small toy dog go into heat and when can I breed her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 15 days old | 12 lbs

Bailey is now a little over three months old. My question is about what age will she come into heat? Will it be sooner than other dogs because she’s a small toy breed? At what age would you recommend breeding her?

A small breed dog will generally come into heat around 6 months old but can be as late is 12 months old. You don't want to breed females until they are two years of age. Make sure to think hard before you breed her. Small breed dogs are more likely to need C-sections. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
