Why is my dog's neck swelling with no clear diagnosis from vets?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Male | 1 year and 2 months old | 90 lbs

My 1 y/o Bernese Mountain dog Jack’s neck is swelling and has been doubling in size every day for the past 3 days. We have him hospitalized in the specialty vet and they have run just about every test on him and still have NO IDEA what is wrong. The swelling is localized to only his neck. They have done a CT scan, Xrays, blood work, FNA on lymph nodes. No signs of cancer but still don’t know why there is swelling. My dog can barely breathe and I feel like we’re getting nowhere... PLEASE HELP!

I assume the ER has run blood work to rule out an issue with the kidneys or liver where there may be low albumin levels in the blood resulting in anasarca which is where fluid builds up in the tissues because protein is lost either through the GI tract or in the urine? Swelling can also be due to infection which may show up on blood work as a high neutrophil count, for which systemic antibiotics can definitely help. I can only imagine how stressful this must be for you. Thankfully at an ER they will be able to intubate or even perform a tracheostomy if he really becomes unable to breathe. Hoping Jack improves soon!
