My cat has growing dark spots on her eyes. What could they be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I hope this time the pictures attached! So my 2 year old cat has these large spots on both eyes that have gotten larger since I brought her in (she was a stray and about 8 months old). My vet said she thinks it might be iris melanosis but wasn't sure since she'd never seen anything like this before so she was going to look into. I had gotten her tested and she's felv negative and the spots don't seem to bother her or effect her vision at all. Just wondering if another vet has seen this before

Your cat is beautiful and the dark spots may be just a normal pigment variation of the iris. There is however, a condition called uveitis that can cause a sudden or gradual color change to the iris, that may be accompanied by squinting, ocular discharge and low intraocular pressure. Steroid antibiotic eye drops are often used to treat uveitis after a fluorescein stain is performed to confirm that there are no ocular ulcers. To know for sure, a consult with a specialty boarded ophthalmologist at a local ER (your vet can provide a referral if needed) would likely provide you with a definitive answer.
