Why does my 7-year-old Shih Tzu have a lumpy tail base near her rear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 8 years old | 11.5 lbs

The tail part near the anal of my 7 year old shih tzu seems to be a bit wollen then lobg and thin again. Is this normal? I have just recently been brushing her again instead of taking her to the groomer and noticed this.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sometimes if dogs get a bit more fat on them they can have a thickening near the top of the tail that looks like a swelling but is just fat. If it is not red, hot to touch, or painful, then I would monitor it. If it is growing then have it seen by a vet. It sounds like it is likely just normal anatomy though. You can always post your question again with pictures. Best of luck with Leila!
