Dog screams when yawning, won't chew. Is it mouth pain? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 60 lbs

My dog has mouth pains? He screams a lot when he yawns and sometimes he’ll even drop his toys and let out a scream. He’s usually a very high pain-tolerant dog so i’m assuming it hurts him a lot seeing as he doesn’t really bite down on his kibble or chew if anything. My parents won’t take him to the vet because they’re convinced that he’ll get over it and it’s just a growth thing. Is there anything I can give him? And what is it?

I'd tell your parents you spoke to a vet for free, and you were advised that he does need to see a vet. It's not normal at all for Koda to scream when yawning, and the fact he's not biting down to eat his kibble. He may stop eating from the pain, which will lead to weight loss. This has to be checked out by a vet, he won't grow out of this. Please have your parents take him into a vet today. Best of luck.
