My cat's paw is infected with pus and licking. Does it need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 10.5 lbs

My cat has an infected back paw. He can walk and jump no problems but he’s licking it a lot. On inspection we gently pressed it and pus came out, also smells a bit fishy. It’s looks like he has 2 claws the usual big one and another smaller claw. Also noticed the claw doesn’t retract as much as it does on the other foot. So far we have bathed it in salty water if we continue with that will that likely be enough? I also have chlorhexidine gluconate I could use.

No, I do not think that bathing in saltwater is enough. This is a very painful abscess that really needs to bee seen by a veterinarian. Your kitty will need antibiotics and pain medicine. Sometimes this can be caused by an autoimmune disease. cancer or an injury.
