Is daily calcium supplementation too much for my bird's diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

Adding on to last question: my bird is already eating vegetables. She is picky and doesn't finish them but we offer them every day. It includes kale, carrots, broccoli, corn, pasta, and whatever else I have to throw on top of that. She is also eating pellets and seeds. Our vet still said we should be adding calcium on top of her food daily from here on out BC of what happened with the egg. Is that too much calcium? Will it hurt her? What should I do??

Too much calcium COULD cause a concern, but maybe taking an occasional blood sample to measure circulating calcium, would be a good idea. This might indicate over supplementation of calcium. Normally birds regulate calcium absorption through the intestines and supplementation is not a problem. Monitor defecation and urination. Keep in contact with your veterinarian. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Gacy. Powdered calcium can lead to excess. It would be best to alter the diet to include green vegetables, that will provide the calcium. Exposure to direct sunlight will increase vitamin D3, which aids in the absorption of calcium in the diet. Good luck.
