My husky randomly pants, coughs, or gags. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 54 lbs

I have a 2 year old male Siberian husky. He acts totally normal and eats and drinks plenty of water. However, being a paranoid dog mom I notice that he sometimes starts to pant randomly for a little bit and he will cough/make a hacking sound or make a gagging sound pretty randomly sometimes here and there. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks!

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he is panting and coughing following excessive play only, then this is not a concern but a normal physiological response. However if the panting and coughing is continuous and not seen during these particular instances, and if it i has been going on for more than 3-4 days with no improvement, then he could have an upper respiratory infection which generally is easily treated with a short course of antibiotics. I would schedule a vet appt if that is the case. I hope that your fur baby turns out ok! Best wishes and take care.
