My macaw laid an egg. Why is she acting sick and possibly egg bound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

My blue and gold macaw laid an egg about at week ago that cracked and I removed it from the cage. This week, she’s laying low on her perch, making squeaking sounds and her tail is tucked under her a bit and feathers fluffed up. I’m a new owner and I haven’t seen her act like this before and I’m worried that’s shes sick or egg bound since she only laid one egg so far. Her wings are drooping a bit and she’s aggressive when I go near her. Do you think she’s egg bound or something else is going on?

Blue and Gold Macaws typically lay a clutch of 2-3 eggs, so she may be working on a second egg. If she will allow, soak her in a warm Epsom salt bath deep enough to submerge her vent. Do this for 30 minutes if she will allow. Afterwards, gently apply a tiny bit of olive oil around her vent to ease laying. If this does not help, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. A physical exam and an x-ray can diagnose egg binding.
