Although a picture would help to determine underlying cause of it more specifically, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an allergy or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. If there is no green/brown/yellow discharge leaking from the lids, or gluing the eyes shut at night, it's not likely infected at this point. The eyes may be very irritated. If you don't have access to plain tear gel eye lubricant, then you can put a warm water compress over the eyes (lids closed) at night to give him some soothing relief. If this doesn't help, set up a consult and I can give you some other ideas. Good luck!

Until you can get to the veterinarian, you can warm compress the eyes the alleviate some of the discomfort and remove some of the discharge. Let the moist warmth loosen the discharge and vet gently rub it away. A vet needs to look at the eyes and make sure that your dog is making enough tears. Lack of tear production can cause problems with the eyes. Also, your vet needs to check for ulcers and also check the pressure for glaucoma. Go to the vet as soon as is possible. Consider going to the ER of you think your pet is in a great deal of pain.

It sounds like he could have an eye infection or allergies. You could gently clean the discharge with a wet washcloth and then instill some artificial tears in his eyes, like GenTeal drops but he will need an antibiotic drop if he has an infection. Schedule an appointment with your vet for an examination.
