Should I worry about my cat smothering my newborn in the bassinet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 12 lbs

We have a newborn child. One of our indoor cats likes to dominate other cat and spaces. Lays next to us or on us in bed once asleep. Will he lay or smother our daughter in her bassinet? He has claimed every space in large two story house. Has layed in bassinet, crib, infant play set. We keep him out of bedroom at this time.

Thank you for submitting your question. A newborn can be stressful for cats (and parents)! Unfortunately, it is possible for the cat to smother the infant. To keep your child safe, the cats will need to be kept out of the bedroom where the infant sleeps at all times. Be sure to provide each cat with attention and affection during waking hours to ease this transition. I hope this information helps!
