Should I worry about my cat smothering my newborn in the bassinet?

We have a newborn child. One of our indoor cats likes to dominate other cat and spaces. Lays next to us or on us in bed once asleep. Will he lay or smother our daughter in her bassinet? He has claimed every space in large two story house. Has layed in bassinet, crib, infant play set. We keep him out of bedroom at this time. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 12 lbs
