My dog ate chicken Marsala from garbage. Why is she vomiting now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 43 lbs

Bella ended up eating chicken Marsala out of the garbage 2 days ago. If you’re not familiar with what that is it’s like chicken with mushroom and a mushroom sauce . We didn’t even think twice about what she at and today she started vomiting the mushrooms up. After figuring out how she got it we all are a little concerned because I heard they’re toxic for dogs? She’s puking them up and keeps having to poop a lot . But only today, not since the incident . She’s not acting different otherwise .

Only certain mushrooms are toxic to dogs, and these do not typically include the type served with a preparation of chicken marsala. The wine content in this dish is usually low enough to be insignificant. My concern is not so much that she ate the food, but that you are still seeing formed mushrooms in her vomit days after consumption. From the time food enters the stomach, it should take no more than four or five hours for it to be processed and moved into the intestinal tract. I would be concerned that there is something holding up the food from moving along, either some structural issue or a gastric motility problem. Since she ate this food out of the garbage, I would consider whether or not there could have been other stuff in the garbage she might have also eaten. I would recommend an x-ray at the very least, and further diagnostics if the images indicate a problem. Hope this helps.
