Why does my new cat have unexplained red spots on eye and bum?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

My 3 year old newly adopted cat is having eye complications. His upper respiratory infection was affecting his eye recently, now that the swelling is down and his 3rd lid is retracting again, he has gotten red spots on his lower waterline. I noticed today that the same red spots are on his bum so I am scared that it's not just his respiratory thats the issue now. But I can't find the same red spots on any pictures online.

Poor Bryce. Unfortunately, it is difficult to make many suggestions without any pictures and without doing a full exam myself. My biggest concern would be that the red spots are actually tiny bruising called petechiae. If it looks like that, I would take him to the vet asap as this could be an issue with clotting or an immune mediated issue. On the other hand, he could just have some type of infection besides the URI. If you haven't already, I would also have your vet check him for feline leukemia and feline aids to make sure he is negative. I hope this helps!
