Is dark hyperkeratosis on dog's pink paw pads normal or a callus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

Hi, my dog suffers from mild hyperkeratosis. She has it on her hind leg hocks and on the edges of most of her pads. I recently saw what I assume is more hyperkeratosis on two of her pads which are pink (the rest of her pads are dark). Is it normal that the hyperkeratosis on the pink pads is dark? Is it maybe some form of callus? Is this something that requires a Vet visit? I have attached photos of both of the pads in question. Thank you.

Thank you for posting the pictures. The hyperkeratosis in the pictures looks very normal in presentation to me. It is rare that hyperkeratosis causes any problems, but if You feel at any time that it is becoming excessive or causing any discomfort then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
