My new puppy pees excessively and has soft stools. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 2 days old | 20 lbs

We just got a 12 week old akita and she has been peeing excessively. For example, she can pee outside 3 times and then come in and pee again 5-10 mins later. The previous owner said she wasn't like that. Should I be concerned? Her stools are also very soft and they were not like that before we got her. We just got her yesterday.

Soft stool can be a result of stress from all the changes. You should schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure there are no parasites or an infection for the soft stool. You can also get them to check a urine sample. Puppies do go often because they cannot hold a lot yet. A urinary infection can also cause this though. The urine sample will decide if it is a medical problem or her just being a puppy and. It having good control yet

Sometimes puppies (and older dogs) will poop several times in a row when they are excited or exercising, and the stubsequent stool can be soft like you’re describing. As long as it’s not diarrhea and there’s no blood or mucus I wouldn’t be concerned. If she does develop diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your veterinarian since she is so young.
