Why is my dog not excited, drinking little, and struggling to pee?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 1 year and 3 months old

My two dogs have been staying with my brother because I haven’t been home a lot lately. I believe he doesn’t let them out. When I let them out of their cages Marley was fine and my other dog berry wasn’t acting normal. She wasn’t excited and would eat, she drank very little and when she was done she went straight back into her cage. When she tries to pee either nothing comes out or very little.

I'm sorry to hear that Berry doesn't seem to be feeling well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her and check a urine sample. If Berry has been holding her urine because she does not want to urinate in the kennel, that can make it more likely that she will develop a urinary tract infection. However, she may just be urinating less if she is drinking less. It's a little hard to tell without more information, but it would be worth having your veterinarian check a urine sample on her just to be on the safe side. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Berry feels better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
