Why won't my dog eat his food but still eats treats? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 6 days old | 13 lbs

My dog lately has not been eating his food but he does and will eat his treats. I just don’t know what to do.

First thing I would recommend is having Max seen by a vet. A decrease in appetite can be an indication of a medical problem such as dental disease, systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Once a medical reason is ruled in or out, the vet can discuss if treatment options are needed for him, or if behavioral measures need to be taken to get him eating his food again. I would take him into a vet today or tomorrow. Best of luck!
