My dog had a UTI. Is a second urine culture or microscope test needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 19 lbs

In a diabetic Malone dog 9, with a UTI prohibiting his Cataract removal. He received an antibiotic injection after culture. Does he need another culture urine or can a microscope view be sufficient? Many thanks. Rob Hawkins, Florida

The culture is helpful for identifying the organism responsible for the infection, but is not necessary to determine the presence of infection. An infection can be detected by a routine urinalysis, which would include a microscopic evaluation of the urine. Considering this, a urine culture would not be necessary unless there was other reasons for doing it. I hope that helps and all is well with Hanz.
