My rehomed cat is depressed. Should I visit or give it time to adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 15.5 lbs

Had to give away 2 days ago my 1year old bengal because im leaving the country in a month :( but the new owner is telling me that the poor cat is not eating since then, not playing, barely drinking water, and meowing at night next to the windows. i suppose he is depressed :( so my question is: would it be a good idea if i pay him a visit and comfort him? Or is it better to give him time to get used to the new home/owner? Thank you

This is a tough question and a tough situation. I’m sorry you are going through this. It is hard to say which scenario would be better for Diego, it probably depends on his personality. If he was very attached to you I think it would be better if you avoided going to see him in his new home as this may confuse him and cause him more stress. I think it would be a good idea to have the new owner take Diego to the vet to be checked out and make sure there are no medical issues going on that could cause him to not want to eat. It may also help if the new owner got somenphermone diffusers, like Feliaway, to help Diego be more relaxed and comfortable in his new home. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
