Why is my old dog shaking, whimpering, and getting sick after dinner?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 7 months old

My dog Booboo is twelve years old, when he's eaten his dinner he sometimes shakes, like he's shivering. Then he starts to wimper and get on and off the chair and walking in circles. He sometimes tries to get my slipper to hold or he will poke my foot with his nose before making himself sick. He does this several times before laying down and going to sleep. Any ideas on why he does this and if there's anything I can do to help him stop making himself sick. From Teresa

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Seeing that Booboo is 12 years old, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to make sure that there are no major changes to his blood that would indicate why he is exhibiting these symptoms. He may be shivering and whimpering because of discomfort. The vomiting could be due to systemic illness or infection. The sooner he is seen by a veterinarian the better. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
