Why are my dog's paw pads yellow, rough, and developing a hairy layer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 14 days old | 40 lbs

My dog has a weird hairy layer in his paws. He use to have pink with black spots on his paws but now they are yellow where the pink used to be and very rough.

Those look like very normal changes to a more adult paw pad. If there is any redness, swelling, or crusting then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Press on the area and see if it seems painful. Sometimes this pigment can be normal. It can also indicate unhealthy skin or an infection. If it seems painful, have him seen by a veterinarian. If he seems normal, you may try adding an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs to his diet. You can also purchase paw balm to apply to the skin for conditioning. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
