My bird is sick, shivering, and tail down after laying an egg. Is she egg bound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 1lb

My bird is sick. She is closing her eyes for a long time. She is shivering. Her tail is downward. She laid an egg yesterday and the yolk came out first out of her so I was wondering if I should be worried?

She could have another egg stuck in her, it's very common in birds and it is called being egg bound, you will need to take her to an avian vet specialist urgently otherwise she is not likely to survive.

I recommend taking Grace to an avian veterinarian asap. She may be egg bound if she has only laid one egg. In the meant time: Keep her in a warm, draft free area and be sure she is eating and has access to a calcium supplement.
