Why aren't my dog's chronic itchy paw skin issues improving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 72 lbs

My two year old GoldenDoodle started experiencing skin problems in November 2017. Paw pain, licking, swelling, redness, pustules, minor bleeding, lameness. He has had 5 "flare-ups" in different feet treated each time with antibiotics and steroids. We are waiting on environmental allergen testing and he started eating Hydrolyzed food about a week ago. The current treatment isn't working this time. Trying Benadryl tonight. What more could I be doing? Vet again tomorrow!

I'm sorry to hear that Miles is having all of these skin problems. How frustrating! It sounds like you are on the right track with the diet trial and the allergy testing. He may be a good candidate for an allergy medication called Apoquel. It controls the itching very well and doesn't have the side effects frequently seen with steroids. Medicated shampoo to bathe the paws can help. So can simply wiping the paws with a damp rag every time he comes in from outside. This physically removes allergens from the environment. I hope this information helps!
