My reptile's tail looks burnt or has tail rot. What's the first aid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I came home today to see Benji's tail looking like this. I'm worried that maybe he burnt it on his heat lamp from climbing too high and sticking his tail up? I just treated it with betadine and neosporin. What do you guys think is wrong with it? Any tips on what I can do to treat him until I take him to a vet? On another note, he had just shed about a week ago. It looks like tail rot to me, but its appeared suddenly.

You can monitor him and clean it daily with diluted betadine or chlorhexidine. I wouldn't recommend the triple antibiotic ointment as it may cause the tail to get dirty quicker. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine the exact cause. Monitor for any progression, keep the tail clean, make sure he continues to eat and drink until he sees the doctor.
