Why is my cat sick with diarrhea, dehydration, and normal vet tests?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

I have five cats and one outdoor barn cat. All of them have had a rotating illness but fecal and blood work have all come back normal for them so the vet is stumped. IV fluids overnight at the vet seemed to clear it out for two of them. Sweet Pea is the only one sick for now. He has very distended eyelids, some diarrhea, and seems dehydrated although he is drinking a lot of water all day and still eating fine. We got a rescue kitten we had to treat for worms 4 months ago but fecals are all good.

Hi. It may be a parasite that isn't picked up on a regular fecal sample. You may need to have a fecal culture done. These more specified tests will check for things like cryptosporidum, c. Diff, salmonella, campylobacter, etc. It may also be a viral infection of some kind that isn't picked up on fecal or blood. I think you should talk to your veterinarian about making sure all 6 pets are treated at the same time, and that the environment is fully cleaned and decontaminated. All bedding and bowels washed, litter boxes disinfected, etc. If you would like to discuss more with more specifics, feel free to open a consultation
