Cat ear mite drops: Should I put them directly into the ear canal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 13 lbs

I have question about the cat ear cleaner and miteacide combos that you can buy at Petco Pet Education Center, etc. this one is called 7M. It has 2 separate bottles one a cleaner ( buy at Petco. Miticide) and one bottle is the miticide. I understand I need to place drops around the base of the ear, close the ear and massage. But shouldn’t I also get 1-2 drops directly and carefully into the ear canal as well? Or at least try? I suppose it’s not possible to get the med all the way down there unless at vet?

Yes to be effective I recommend you place a few drops into the ear canal opening. Then rub the ear to massage the medication down into the canal. As the discharge comes out of the ear I clean that with a cotton ball and the ear cleaner. You will not kill the mites if you don’t get the medication into the ear canal. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Morris.
