My dog has a missing tooth. Is it infected? When to see a vet?

I have just noticed my dogs tooth is missing, we have recently just moved home and she has been destructive with her toys which is why I think it has come out. I am worried it has become infected ?

I see what you mean from the pictures, it does look like where the tooth was is red. I would have Mystie seen by a vet for this problem tomorrow. Her mouth needs to be checked to see if the root of the tooth is still in her gums, and if she does have an infection, the vet can prescribe antibiotics for her. I'd soften her dry food tonight with warm water, and rinse out her mouth after she's done eating to make sure any food isn't caught where the tooth used to be in. Best of luck!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures you provided, the tooth looks as though it was quite infected especially if it fell out on its own. A lot of times, teeth that are this infected that Fall out have also lost some of the root characteristics. By this I mean the roots will sometimes appear as though they are missing or very rounded and short as opposed to their healthier appearance. A lot of times these teeth will have a black discoloration if the tooth is dead or may appear black due to the Tartar and plaque that has grown on the surface of the tooth. Flushing with saline is fine and the hole where the tooth previously was should heal on its own now that the problematic tooth is out of the tooth socket. I would definitely consider keeping him on antibiotics and also do what we call Pulse antibiotic therapy. I did this with my own dog and would Place him on a course of antibiotics every other month at a high dose using clindamyc

My puppy is being spayed in 3 weeks. She has a baby canine still in her mouth next to her adult canine. It snapped and has turned grey. I called the vet and they said if she can wait until she gets spayed that would be good but if it gets infected to
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jolene. Unfortunately, the only way to tell for definitively if the tooth has been infected is to take an x-ray of her mouth. The area above her gumline does appear red. If it is possible to move her surgery sooner, that would be ideal. However, as long as she is eating, drinking and she does not experience a swelling of her muzzle, then you can likely wait. I hope this information helps!

Will my dog's teeh fall out or is it less serius, her gums are also all red, she did't want me to look at her teeth propobly because they hurt, she also doesn't wat to eat anything thats hard.
Dogs need regular dental care just like humans, and yes if her teeth are badly infected, they could fall out. In addition, severe dental disease can and does lead to infection spreading elsewhere in the body via the blood system and cause things such as liver abscesses and endocarditis (a heart infection). It's very clear that her teeth are hurting if she won't eat anything hard and doesn't want you to look at her mouth. She absolutely needs to see a vet for this problem, and I would call your vet today to make an appointment for her. Best of luck.

The canine tooth looks like it might have a little evidence of gingivitis but it can be difficult to tell from a picture. I also would not prescribe antibiotics for dental disease in most situations - if the tooth is infected removing it is the best treatment option. Even though the tooth probably will fall out there may be other diseased teeth since it can be difficult to evaluate the extent of disease without sedation - you may want to ask your vet about a dental cleaning or if your vet does not do this procedure see another vet.

I think my dog has some infection in his mouth. He cannot eat. He doesnt even move much these days. What Should I do
Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. He could have an infected tooth/teeth and need extractions and a dental cleaning as soon as possible. Infected gums and teeth can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream that can adversely affect your dog's heart. This problem needs to be addressed now.

My dogs back tooth is bleeding. I tried taking pictures but she wouldn’t sit still. She doesn’t seem like she’s in pain. Is there anything I can do.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like Ginger may have broken her tooth. I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed. The vet that looks at it will be able to help more once a diagnosis is made. Good luck and kisses to Ginger!

I recently adopted a dog from the shelter and noticed he has a broken tooth. Should I be concerned?
Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Mars' troubles. It's a bit hard to see from the pictures but the tooth definitely looks a little bit discolored. And it almost looks like what we call a "slab fracture" where a flat, wide piece of the tooth breaks off. Dogs can do this by biting onto something hard, like a bone. This can expose the inside of the tooth to infection, and also be very uncomfortable. I would definitely have a veterinarian take a look at the tooth, to see if it should be extracted under anesthesia as this is the best way to treat a tooth like this. By removing the tooth, one removes the source, or potential source, of pain and discomfort. The veterinarian can also clean the rest of the teeth too, which would be great for Mars' overall health. Is this a bad tooth or gum infection?
It appears to be some moderate gingivitis and tartar. The tooth underneath the red area may be affected, and may not. It would take an xray of that area to know for sure. I recommend getting her examined by your veterinarian and planning a dental cleaning and oral x-rays.

Do I need to take my dog to our vet? She has a hole in her lip/gum line caused from the tooth above. Her tooth now rests in the hole. It’s not infected and there is no blood. Don’t know when it happened.
Yes, I recommend making an appointment to have Roxy seen by a vet. The lesion may be painful, and could become infected if left untreated. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet.

My dog had an anxiety attack and chewed on her kennel last night. She chewed so hard that she lost a tooth. I am not able to get her into the vet until Saturday - what can I do to make sure she is ok
I'm sorry to hear that! If its a large cheek tooth, or a canine tooth, try to get her in sooner than Saturday if at all possible. If its an incisor (one of the small teeth in the front) its probably fine to wait that long. In the meantime, offer her soft food, or moisten her dry food with water or chicken broth. You can use a dog oral rinse if you want to be proactive about it, but I don't think its entirely necessary. Whether or not specific treatment will be needed depends on what tooth it was and the extent of damage at the gumline. If there is a concern that the root fractured, or if the defect is quite large, surgery may be needed. If she seems to be painful or isn't eating anything, take her in as soon as you can.
