My dog's cherry eye keeps coming back. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 23 days old

Hi so it seems like my dog has cherry eye. It comes and goes, usually I massage it a little and it will go away for a few weeks but he’s got it again right now and it isn’t going away when I massage it but it is going away after he sleeps but now it’s coming back after a few hours. Just wondering if it worth taking to the vet to get it checked or wait a little? He is a chihuahua who is 6 months old

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ollie. Cherry eye is a condition where the third eyelid bulges out of it's normal location. It requires surgery to permanently replace the eyelid back in place. It would be worth having him evaluated to see if surgery is warranted in his case or if he needs any eye medications. Sometimes tear production can be reduced in these cases. I hope this information helps you and Ollie!
