My new puppy is scared and hides. Is she adjusting or abused?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 25 days old | 2.21 lbs

My puppy cries when we pet her and when she sees us walk in her general direction. In addition to crying, she also hides under the couch or whimpers and cowers in the corner. Despite that, she follows us around and even sits at our feet as long as we don’t move much or startle her. When she’s relaxed or sleepy, she lets us pet her. We just got her two days ago. Could this be normal behavior because she’s still adjusting to us or is it possible that she may have been physically abused before?

Though it is not normal behavior for the average puppy, it may be completely understandable for Alaia, depending on where she came from. If she is from a pet shop, puppy mil, or other abusive situation, it will take her itme to trust you. Always let her make the first move for the time bieng. Feed her from your hand so she begins to associate good things with you (you don'thave to do her whole meal that way!). You seem to be able to judge very well when she will be receptive to you (when she's sleepy, for example), so go by those parameters in your interactions with her. Do not expose her to anything potentially traumatic of possible (like a dog park or a visit with your relatives). A vet trip may be unavoidable, but keep it as low-key as possible and notify the staff in advance about her problem. If you need further assistance, you can click on the prompt to initiate a consult. Good luck!
