Can my dog break teeth on chainlink fence? Does bitter apple help?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 6 months and 23 days old | 48 lbs

Follow up on Maria. Could she break her teeth (canines) pulling on chainlink fencing? What is the likely hood in percent wise? Also bitter apple spray would still work as well on metal surfaces? Thank you so much ;)

Yes, she could break her teeth pulling on the chainlink fence. I can't give an exact percentage of it happening, but there could be a high likelihood of it occurring. I know this from personal experience when my own dog broke off his canine pulling at a fence. Bitter apply spray should work on a metal surface. I hope this helps!

You are correct that very hard objects can break the teeth and a broken teeth may need to be removed to prevent pain and future infections. The only way to know if there is damage to any teeth is to have Bruno examined by the veterinarian. Plus it will set your mind at ease. Try to get this done within the next few days. Best of luck.

Broken teeth can be prone to abscesses. Bella is very close to the age where she will start shedding her teeth but I still recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian to be safe. Moving forward, do not allow her to chew on very hard objects. As a general rule, if you cannot make an indentation with your thumb nail in a toy, you run the risk that it could break her teeth if she is an aggressive chewer. Also make sure she is not chewing on the bars of her kennel as this will break teeth as well. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'm sorry Sienna hasn't been feeling well lately! It is very concerning that she hasn't eaten recently, and the milk you gave her could be causing her GI upset. It's never recommended to give dogs milk because it causes GI upset. It could be she is so desperate to go to the potty that she's chewing the fence to get out. I think the first step is to get her into a vet today, especially if she hasn't been feeling well and isn't eating. That could be the cause of her sudden change in behavior in the dog run, and she should be treated as soon as possible. Once that has been addressed, then I would start thinking about a bitter apple spray and possible potty patch if the behavior continues after she has been treated. Best of luck!

Dental fractures and accidents can occur with some of the very hard chew toys and I generally do not recommend these for use long term or when not directly supervised. Short periods of chewing can be good for dental health but I prefer the softer toys or rope toys to prevent cracked and broken teeth

My puppy keeps dragging his pee pads onto his bed and loves chewing on them. Would spraying bitter apple spray help avoid this or will it make him avoid using the bathroom on the pad all together?
It will not likely deter him from eating them. The seem to not the lick the taste for the first lick, then it wears off and they go right back to chewing it. It does have potential to make him avoid it also. I would try to tape the edges of the pad down so he cannot move them. Once he quits that behavior and the habit is broken, you won't have to worry about it. Also make sure he has a rotation of toys so he does not get bored with the same ones

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. So this is a “complicated” fracture of the canine- meaning the pulp cavity is exposed. Unfortunately, if Titus walked into my office, I’d recommend scheduling a dental and removing the tooth. Once the pulp cavity is exposed, bacteria can travel up it and cause a deep abscess in the bone. Then you have weeks of antibiotics and still have to do the procedure. This does not always happen, but there is no way to know which case it will happen to. The other option is seeing a dental specialist for a root canal and crown. That being said, it’s not very painful unless he is chewing with it (which he’ll probably avoid). And not much is going to happen in the next two days, or even in the next two months. Don’t put anything on there and just leave it alone. Schedule an appointment when it’s convenient and talk with your vet about your options. I'm sorry to hear about this. The biggest concern with broken teeth is if the tooth root is exposed. This is not an emergency, but is painful and makes the teeth and roots susceptible to infection. In some cases the teeth can be repaired by a veterinary dentistry specialist, but in most cases they would have to be extracted. Considering this happened at the veterinary office, they should take some responsibility. I also understand that this would have been a difficult situation to control for the vet clinic and there may have been some broken teeth or dental disease prior to this incident. In these cases, I recommend talking with the veterinary practice owner and expressing your concerns and how you would like to be compensated. I understand that you must be very upset with them, but these matters can get much worse if you involve other people rather than communicating directly with the people in charge. You are correct that antlers and nylon bones will break teeth, but they can also cause obstructions and/or perforations in the GI tract. I recommend a Kong toy. Those are very tough chew toys that are hard to dogs to destroy. You can also fill them with treats. I'd recommend, as an occasional treat, filling it with peanut butter and freezing it overnight in the freezer. That will keep her occupied for a while.

Yes, you are correct that ice cubes can crack teeth, so instead of giving Cooper big chunks of ice, you can break it up into smaller pieces that will make it less likely for him to crack a tooth on :-)

Hello. The teeth are quite worn down, but without a thorough oral exam, it is difficult to evaluate exactly what is going on. I can tell you that some dogs, out of anxiety, boredom, even an obsessive compulsive condition, will chew on rocks or chain link fencing & can wear down & chip away at the teeth resulting in this.
