My Shih Tzu puppy is constipated. How can I help him drink water?

Hi. I just got an 8week old shih tzu puppy a week ago. He will not drink water (Ive been diluting his food so I know he's at least getting SOME water) I believe he's constipated now. He cries and crouches while trying to go. Tonight he tried twice but nothing major happened. I read that pumpkin is good to relive him but idk because he's so young. Can you help me please? Also are there any tips to make him drink water?

Samson is so cute!! Canned pumpkin can help. You can add a very small amount to each meal. Feed canned food with the dry to add water. Try getting a doggy water fountain to encourage wafer drinking. Add ice cubes for him to play with. If you feel he is painful, and can't pass stool at all, I would get him in to be checked out. You can speak to your veterinarian after the examination to see if an enema or laxatives are needed to help. Good luck.

    No, this is not normal. Puppies should drink water independent of their food, but you are doing the right thing by mixing water into your puppy's food to keep him hydrated. Dehydration can certainly lead to constipation issues, but since he is a young puppy, parasites are another possibility for his difficulty pooping. Try mixing a very small amount of low sodium chicken broth into his water to tempt him to drink. Also try using a very shallow bowl or saucer because he may not have learned how to drink from a deeper more typical water bowl. If your puppy has not pooped in over 24 hours, he will need to see his vet for an exam and possible stool softeners or enema. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration, so if he still won't drink, he should see his vet because he may need to receive fluids.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Cosmo. Poor boy. Try adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) with his food to see if that helps. You really should have him checked out by a vet for this as I see he's not neutered and prostate problems can cause constipation in dogs. I hope this helps!

Constipated, hard small pieces of stool, loss of appetite, avoids movement of tail. (11yr old shih tzu). Is there anything to treat him or make him feel better?
You can try to add canned pumpkin or canned beans to the diet to help with constipation and make the stool softer, you can also try 1/4 tea spoon of miralax twice a week to help with this. Since he is not neutered I would be concerned his prostate may be enlarged causing him to feel bad and putting pressure on the colon making things difficult. I would recommend seeing your vet to see if this a problem or an enema may be needed to help

What do I give him if he’s constipated
You can trying giving Baby some canned puppy food mixed in with his dry puppy food, or adding water to the dry puppy food to get him more moisture. A cause of constipation can be dehydration. You can also try adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to his food to see if that helps. If it does not help, he will need to see a vet. Best of luck and happy holidays.

Benzo has had diarrhea for two days now with NO blood. I have taken away his puppy food, and made him rice and chicken, which he has happily eaten. However now he is not drinking any water (he usually drinks a lot of water), and when he tried to poop
Poor Benzo! Sometimes after they have diarrhea it takes a little while to build up a full bowel movement so he could be straining simply because he has the urgency to go but there isn’t much there. On the other hand, with the hair he could be constipated. Either way fiber will be beneficial. You can give him 1/4 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to help balance his GI tract. If the chicken and rice, has any chicken broth or water in it then that could be why he is having decrease water consumption. If not, you could certainly add some water to his meal to help him drink more water. I am concerned that he is more lethargic. Since he is so small, I would have your vet take a look at him to assess his hydration and make sure he doesn’t have any parasites or anything more serious going on like parvo. Your vet will be able to give him some fluids if needed and prescribe his some medicine to help make him feel better. I hope this helps and he feels better really soon.

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. Make sure she has adequate access to water. You can offer a spooon full of canned raw pumpkin and walk her often today for 20 minutes (5 times or as necessary for her to pass stool). If this doesn’t work, then she may need to have laxitives or even an enema to relieve her, and thus she would need to be evaluated by her veterinarian. If she is noted to have vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain, then she should be evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, and thanks for your question. Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. My dog is having some hard time to poop. What are the foods that can help him? I heard that adding salt in his drinking water would help him.. please advise me
I would definitely not add salt as this can cause him to have salt poisoning and subsequent neurological problems. I would suggest adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to his food daily which will add fiber and hopefully allow him to go #2 a bit easier. If he is still having issues then I would have his prostate examined to check if it is enlarged and possible the underlying problem as to why he can't go easily. An enlarged prostate will push up on the colon, making the hole narrower so that poop can't easily pass through. The cure for this is to have him on a laxative through your vet and ultimately getting him neutered can resolve this issue for good. I hope everything works out for your pet Kitty. Take care.

Zephy is having frequent constipation. I have started to keep track of his poop schedule, type, amount. When he is constipated, he pushes hard with no result. I am worried he may push too hard and cause problems. No other symptoms. What should I try
You can try to add some fiber to his diet such as canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) or psyllium seed husk. This should help with retaining fluid in the feces and bulk them up and help eliminate them. Also make sure Zephyr drinks plenty of water and is fed a good quality puppy food for large dogs.

To help soften the stool you can offer a little bit of canned pumpkin. This may help the constancy, however, you'll want to be sure to keep an eye on him. If you notice any vomiting or blood in his stool you'll want to visit your local Veterinarian for possible bacterial overgrowth in the gut.
