New puppy breathing heavily after travel. Is it anxiety or illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 20 days old | 18 lbs

Hi I just got my new puppy from a reputable breeder in Pennsylvania. I live in New York so it was about a 3 hour drive. I took him out for a little to relieve himself as well as by him a new harness and treats. On our way back home he started breathing really heavily and then panting opening his mouth for a few seconds and the closing it. This really worried me. He’s been breating heavily all day but not serious until earlier. Could this be stress and axiety from moving to a new place or what?

I would recommend taking Buddy to a veterinarian if we are still breathing heavy. They can get stressed and breath heavier from anxiety but my concern is that puppies this young can get sick and decline quickly. If Buddy is resting comfortably now I would keep an eye on him but if he starts to breathe heavy then I recommend a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
