Our 5.5 month old rescue occasionally has a small amount of watery, brown, malodorous discharge from (we are assuming) her anus. It happens randomly indoors at night that we’ve noticed. No signs of irritation other than the occasional brief licking. Is this normal?

It is not uncommon. They have 2 glands on either side of their rectum that can fill with left over material. As they go to the bathroom, a small amount gets excreted. If they get too full or scared, it can be released at random times. You can add canned green beans or canned pumpkin to his diet to help empty them better when she goes to the bathroom. Your vet can check the glands and empty them for you also.
