My dog has a broken bone. How much rest does she need to heal?

My pup has a splint for a broken bone since 5 days ago. And today she’s finally getting more confidence to walk faster.. should I let her walk around the house or inside her crate most of the time??

Nymeria needs to stay in her crate as much as possible and should not be allowed to walk fast. Five days is not long enough for a broken bone to heal and she needs complete rest for a couple of weeks in order for her bone to heal correctly. If you allow her too much activity, this will prevent the bone from healing, and she could end up needing surgery to fix it. Best of luck!

With a broken bone, Biko should not be walking around at all. You need to keep him in a kennel to allow the leg the best chance to heal. He should also be in a splint, not a supportive wrap. He may need sedatives. I recommend to call the veterinarian and tell them what is happening. They can provide a splint as well as sedation for Biko. It will take 6 to 8 weeks for the bone to fully heal. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

What are the stages of rehabilitation for a dog after an operation o set a broken leg?
The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.

My dog leg bone was relocoted.so doctor said to keep in a carpet cage so he can stay in one place.so is there anything to do to keep him in one place.but when hes in rhe cage he shouts to take him out.when we takes him out he runs allover
You just need to ignore Shady crying to get out and keep him in the cage until it's time to take him to the bathroom. Take him out to potty on a leash, and bring him right back into the cage when he's done. I know it's annoying his crying, but he has to rest in order to heal his bone. Best of luck.

My pup got hurt on her rear leg. She’s limping and is in pain when I touch her leg. I can’t tell whether she has a broken bone.
Poor Nymeria! She is adorable! Limping and crying when touched can definitely be an indication of a fracture (broken bone). I recommend having Nymeria seen by a vet right away, as this can be extremely painful. They can localize the trauma with an x-ray and stabilize the leg with a bandage, cast, or surgery if necessary. There are 24 hour emergency clinics in most towns/cities. I hope all is well!

My 1.5 year old dog broke his back leg 23 days ago. We had an external fixator put in/on under the advice of our orthopedic vet. So far, our vet doesn't explain things clearly. All he would tell me is that it's not healing as quickly as he had hoped
3weeks is quite a short recovery time, there is some evidence of early callous around the fracture but this is still poorly organized. I would also recommend further rest and repeat xrays regularly up until 6weeks before any further intervention is considered. Cage rest should be planned

Hello. If you follow all instructions from the surgeon & there are no unforeseen complications, then Sophie should have a complete recovery. She will be uncomfortable for awhile, but she is young & young bones heal very quickly. She will probably need to take things easy for 6-8 weeks, but if the break did not penetrate the skin nor involve any joints or growth plates, she should do great. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hello my dog is limping from her hind leg. I took xrays I want an opinion
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Muneca is limping. Based off the radiograph, it looks like her fibula, the smaller bone in her lower leg, may be fractured. It is difficult to know for sure without an orthogonal view, but that may be the reason for her limping. I recommend restricting her activity to cage rest and leash walks only, do not let her run or play for at least 4 weeks to allow time for the bone to heal. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform bloodwork and see if it is safe to prescribe her anti-inflammatory pain medications to help her feel more comfortable. NEVER give human pain medications to dogs as they can be markedly toxic. I hope this is helpful!

No, do not take Annie for a walk with a broken leg. She is needs to be on strict cage rest to help the leg heal. She is in a lot of pain and that will be causing the shaking. She needs pain medication from the vet to control her pain. Please take her into a vet now.

I am so sorry to hear Princess is in pain! Bones take 6-8 weeks to heal if they don’t move at all- like in a cast or splint. You cannot speed up healing. Without a cast or splint the bones will move and delay healing and keep her in constant pain. She also needs pain medication daily for the breaks. If you cannot afford the proper treatment, I would contact rescue groups to take over her care. I hope you can find her some relief soon. Kisses to Princess!
