Should my 6-month French Bulldog puppy eat raw, wet, or dry food?

I have a French bulldog who is now 6 months. I have been feeding him the food that I purchased when I picked him up. He eats Health Extension Lamb Entree wet food with the little bits dry food. I have been seeing that a raw diet might be better. This is my first puppy so I'm new to all of this. I just would like to know which option would be best as well as the cons.

Butta is so cute! I personally do not recommend raw diets. There hasn't been any scientific evidence that they are beneficial to dogs, and there is a real risk of your dog and you getting sick from the diet due to the bacteria. You would get sick from handling the diet. In addition, it's very hard to get a raw diet balanced at home unless you pay for a commercial. I always personally recommend feeding either canned food or dry food, as those have been proven scientifically to be both healthy and nutritionally balanced for your puppy. I hope this helps!

Any high quality puppy food will be good. There is no one "best" food. Choose a food that is easy for you to get, is readily eaten and does not cause any gastrointestinal upset. Stay away from store or discount brands as these typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Premium diets include Canidae, Acana, Orijen or Royal Canin. The website www.dogfoodadvisor.com is an excellent resource for comparing diets.

Congratulations your new addition! Truthfully, I never recommend raw diets to any dog of any age. Just like humans, dogs can become ill from bacteria (such as Listeria or Salmonella) present in raw meats, and can infect people that they lick after eating raw meats. Puppies in particular have more specific nutritional requirements to maintain optimal growth. For this reason, I encourage feeding a commercial dog food formulated either for puppies or all life stages. Royal Canin, Science Diet and Purina ProPlan are all good quality brands of food with a significant amount of research and clinical testing behind them. The bag of dog food generally has a chart that depicts how much Maggie should eat given her current age and body weight. Each food has a different caloric density, so continue to follow the recommendations on the food as she grows. After 1 year of age, you can switch to an adult diet, but anytime you change Maggie's food, be sure to do so by gradually mixing old and new foods

Great question! Wet food mixed with a kibble diet is better for Fenrir. I never recommend raw diets. There is too much risk of him getting sick from bacteria that is present in raw food, and there is a risk of you getting sick from making the meals and him passing it along to you (i.e. eating the food and then licking your face). There have been numerous cases of dogs getting sick on the raw food diet. In addition, there's no proof that raw diets are beneficial to dogs. I would keep him on his current diet. Great question! Beer (LOVE his name!) needs a puppy formulated food until he is 12 months of age. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps.

I have a French bulldog who came home on a grain free diet. She constantly has soft poo and we have ruled out any medical concerns. I would like to change her food to regular diet (not grain free). Is this okay to make the switch?
I'm glad to hear that Roo is healthy aside from this soft stool. Yes, it's absolutely fine to switch her to a standard grain-containing diet. The FDA has issued warnings about grain-free diets and a concerning link to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), so switching is a great idea. I prefer brands like Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin, Iams, or Eukanuba, as these companies employ veterinary nutritionists and conduct proper testing on their diets. Since Roo is only 6 months old, be sure to look for a puppy food, as these are formulated for growth. When she's about one year old, you can switch her to an adult food. One of the most important things to remember is that anytime you switch her diet - even just opening a new bag of food - it's best to mix the old and new foods together gradually over 5-7 days. Sudden diet changes can trigger some vomiting and/or diarrhea, which is the last thing anyone needs! I hope that everything goes well!

I am buying a puppy who is fed on raw meet currently, a barf diet I believe. I do not want to continue this once I get the puppy home at 9 weeks to eat dry foods. Is this possible and is it healthy for the dog?
Great question! I personally do not like raw diets. There is absolutely no proof that they are good for dogs, and pose a health risk to both the dog and owner. They are often not nutritionally balanced either. I think it's great you want to feed Dexter a dry dog food, and I recommend that! A dry food diet is much healthier for him, and will be nutritionally balanced. He will need a puppy formulated food, as puppies need higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It's always frustrating when we try to feed our dogs the best diets, but they decide that they don't want to eat them. I think you have a few options. Yes, you can try a different dry food. Sometimes when dogs eat the same food all the time, they can get tired of it. I have also seen some of the more natural foods have problems with storage once the bag is open because of the all natural preservative, so if you are at the end of a big bag, gettting a new bag of food may solve the problem. If you want to feed a raw diet, you could also look at feeding a commercially available raw diet and removing the dry food from his diet. If Gus does not want to eat another type of dry food or a new bag of the old food or does not seem to feel well in any way, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him and make sure there isn't anything medical going on. I personally never recommend feeding dogs raw diets. You are correct that raw meat is dangerous to humans, and it can be dangerous to dogs as well. They can also get E coli and salmonella poisoning from eating it. In addition, it is extremely difficult to give your dog a balanced diet with a home diet including all the nutrients they need to be healthy. Instead, I recommend feeding your dog a high quality dry food food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet.

Do not give Bailey a raw diet. There is no proof these are beneficial for dogs and are often imbalanced nutritionally. In addition, there is a risk she could get sick from E. coli and Salmonella, and so can you. You'd be hard pressed to find any vet who would recommend a raw diet. I'd give her canned food.
