My golden retriever is whining and panting. Is she in heat or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 66 lbs

My golden retriever has suddenly started whining (like as if she wants something) when she is just sitting around. She's also panting a lot. This isn't unusual for her as she pants often, but not this often. I'm wondering if she is about to come into season, or should I be worried its something else?

Hi. Margo is a sweet name. Sometimes, yes, behaviors can change with heat cycles. But I would worry if she is whining more and panting more that something is bothering her. This could be new nervousness about something, it could be that something is painful, it could be she isn't feeling well, or even that her anal glands could be bothering her. The best thing would be to make her an appointment with your veterinarian and have her get a full examination. You will then know if there is something to be worried about or not. If you have more specific questions, feel free to open up a consult.
