My 8-month-old cat has kidney failure but seems normal. What's his prognosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 months and 22 days old | 12 lbs

My 8 month old adopted cat was recently diagnosed with Kidney Failure. Was very healthy prior. After having symptoms for 6 days (Vet originally thought it was a stomach bug) he received SQ fluids for several days and has been switched to a “Kidney Diet”. He is acting like his normal self now, 1.5 weeks after treatment was started. Attached is his blood work. Follow up with my vet is in 1 month. Just curious of another profesional’s opinion of prognosis (life expectancy) acute or chronic, etc.

Poor Echo! This definitely looks like kidney disease from first glance. Since he is only 8 months old I would be concerned about acute. BUT I would certainly want to recheck his kidney values soon as well as an urinalysis. The concentration of his urine will also help to determine if these values are truly due to kidney failure or something else. Since he is so young, I would also consider having an abdominal ultrasound done on his kidneys to see if he is suffering from polycystic kidney disease. I hope this helps!
