Why is my senior dog biting pink skin growths? Should I remove them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My dog Maximus has several (cysts? Moles?) They are pink in colour and bulge looking, none of them are bigger than the tip of a finger and I thought they were from age (He is 9) Until recently, he has started biting them. Sometimes completely off. I am very worried about this as he is hurting himself quite a bit even when they grow back. Should I have them removed?

It would be a good idea to have Maximus examined by your veterinarian. These growths may be benign but there is a chance that they are getting infected and this is causing Maximus to bite at them. Unfortunately, it is also possible that that some of these growths could be cancerous. Your veterinarian can evaluate the growths and help you decide if surgical removal is best or if any medications are needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best of luck to you and Maximus!
