My dog was shaved. Will his guard hairs grow back or only undercoat?

Do dogs guard hairs grow back??? I shaved one of my chow chows hair short as I got these new doggy clippers and got carried away I have to say I did a pretty decent job making him look like a lion but I shaved the hair on his body short and a grooming tutorial online said u should never shave too short as the guard hairs don’t grow back is it true? Will my dog only ever grow u undercoat from now on?? How is there any type of hair regrowth medicine for dogs

Great question! I have a Chow Chow as well, and I shave her every summer because she gets very hot in the heat. I typically shave her down to her skin, and all her fur has always grown back. It will take time for it to grow back fully, usually over the course of a couple of months, but both her undercoat and overcoat grow back fully. I would not be too concerned, I hope this helps!

Many breeds with heavy under coats will have extremely slow hair regrowth if the hair is shaved. This can take up to 2 years to regrow. That's why is is so important to keep these dogs regularly groomed to avoid needing to have them shaved (because something that is the only option). You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to ensure a full coat griws back but I would recommend a well balanced diet (preferably a skin support diet) and an omega fatty acid supplement to promote a skin and coat regeneration. Regular brushing at home can boost circulation to the skin and may also help but time will tell - some dogs recover a full coat at the first attempt but some may take years to grow out

Oh no, I'm sorry Hana's fur was cut so short! I apologize but I'm not sure what you mean by "patches situation." Her fur will grow back as long as it was before, it will just take a couple of months. I shave my own Chow Chow into a lion cut (she has gorgeous red fur) to keep her cooler in the summer, and her fur always grows back as before. I understand being upset, but try not to worry too much because her fur will grow back in time. You can try giving her some fish oil supplements which can help with skin health. The dosage for that is 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. I hope this helps!

I have searched on google that whenever a pom's fur was shaved into somewhat bald, it will never grow back. How true is that?
That is not true. The fur usually grows back, perhaps softer than before unless there is an underlying medical condition. Dogs with a low thyroid condition or skin problems, or old age sometimes the fur will not grow back or it will grow much more slowly. Certainly the quality of the coat may change also. It will probably take a few months for the hair to grow back completely. If he is young and healthy, his hair should be able to grow normally and I wouldn't be concerned that he will look like this for the rest of his life!

About two months ago my mom shaved our dogs w an at home dog grooming kit. It did not come out very nicely or evenly haha but these parts of his fur had not grown back and it is very rough at the touch. Recently it has been peeling and turning pink.
The fur will eventually regrow. It will not be as soft as the original coat and it may grow in darker. The redness and peeling may indicate infection due to irritation or licking after the clipping. Consider an exam with your veterinarian in case Jasper needs systemic antibiotics and/or topical treatment. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing until the hair has grown in. A fish oil supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, can be added to the diet to promote healthy skin and coat. If he spends time outdoors, consider a small tee shirt to protect his skin from sunburn.

This is very common behavior in dogs who have been shaved, especially if it is their first time. It may take Chip a couple of days to get used to his new coat and then he should settle down. Typically the hair will regrow in about 4 months.

No, shaving a retriever will not help her coat development and will contribute to her problems. Underlying issues such as poor intestinal or pancreaticfunction, mites or nutritional deficiencies may still be playing a role. A skin support diet such as royal canin skin care would help as well ad a full physical exam by your vet to rule out medical causes

For some dogs the coat and pigment in the fur can change with age. For some dogs the coat will also grow back differently after a close shave. As long as the skin underneath the dark hairs appears normal I wouldn’t be concerned about a change in fur color.
