What to put on my dog's burst grease burn blister and prevent licking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | 11 months and 22 days old | 55 lbs

My dog was under my feet the other night when I was cooking. Some hot grease fell on her the back of her legs. I honestly didn’t know what to do. I didn’t put anything on it. I didn’t see a blister that night or the next day, so I thought maybe her fur had saved her. Yesterday I noticed the blister and it appears to have already burst open. Is there anything I should put on it? Should I wrap it up to keep her from licking it?

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Molly. Grease can cause some significant burns, so be sure to examine her closely to make sure that there aren't any other blisters that are developing anywhere else. In general, for a small superficial wound, I usually recommend keeping the area clean (using warm water or an antibacterial cleaner like Bactine) and making sure that the fur around the area does not stick to the wound. Some people like to use a topical ointment like Neosporin, but you have to make sure that the wound does not have anything stick to it (like hair or dirt), so sometimes that can make things more difficult. It is important to keep Molly from licking at the wound, but legs are very difficult to bandage and if the bandage sticks to the wound, it will be painful, so it might be a better option to use an e-collar for a few days until the wound heals. If the wound is red, oozing any discharge or has an odor, it might be infected and should be examined by your veterinarian. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
